The Japanese Society of M-GTA (Modified Grounded Theory Approach) for Innovative Qualitative Research

The Japanese Society of M-GTA

Overview

The Japanese Society of M-GTA (Modified Grounded Theory Approach) is for a group of people who study and utilize the M-GTA, a qualitative research method developed by a Japanese sociologist, Y. Kinoshita. The Society was founded in 1999 and as in 2012 it has over 400 members, --professional researchers, graduate students and professionals in practice-- in various human services such as nursing, healthcare, medicine, caregiving, rehabilitation, social work, clinical psychology, school education, business management and in sociology. Today the M-GTA is one of the most popular qualitative research methods in Japan. And, in addition to the Tokyo Society, there are branches in western Japan, northern island of Hokkaido, and southern island of Kyushu.

Activities

The main activities of the Society are its regular workshops. In Tokyo, workshops are held every other month mainly at Rikkyo University. Each workshop comprises presentations of research results and research plans by members and there are active exchanges between the presenters, and the supervisors and audience. Besides the regular workshops, there is one master's thesis presentation meeting in which the participants are limited to those who have finished writing their master's theses using the M-GTA and master's program students who are writing or planning to write such theses. In addition, the Society also holds public workshops (once a year) and training camps (once a year), as well as publishing newsletters (6 issues annually).
